Colorado logs a second straight month of employment gains on strong government hiring

Public sector employment finally above pre-pandemic levels in May

DENVER, CO - MAY 3: Gilberto Orenday, left, a junior at Legacy Charter School, talks with Aubrey Hall, recreation assistant with Commerce City Parks, Recreation & Golf, right, about potential jobs during a job fair on May 3, 2022 in Denver, Colorado. Generation Schools Network hosted a Signing Day and Job Fair to offer Denver metro area High School students an opportunity to sign with a company (similar to High School signing day for athletes) for a summer job. More than 100 students from metro area schools were able to meet with more than two dozen employers. Students got tips on how to build a resume, how to prepare and have an interview and other job related skills. Some of the employees at the job fair included Advanced Manufacturing Science Institutes, Art Garage, Aurora Community College, Brookdale Senior Living, CCHN - Colorado Community Health Network, Commerce City Aquatics Department, CrossPurpose, Denver Public Schools, Denver Zoo & Concessions, Gold Star Learning Options, King Soopers, 24 Hour Fitness, Teacher Cadet Program, UC Health, UPS, and WorkOption. Generation Schools Network is a nonprofit organization that has been helping schools and districts throughout Colorado build college/career readiness pathways for students. Employers manned booths in the gymnasium. The event included resume assistance, interview support, a chance to learn about employers, and a chance to interview with employers. Students that didnÕt have resumes were able to build their resumes on the spot with the assistance of employer partners. Employers interacted with students and asked them interview questions and help them go through a mock interview. (Photo by Helen H. Richardson/The Denver Post)

Getting your player ready...
Since last fall, Colorado employers have gone from adding jobs one month to shedding them the next, resulting in an economy that has behaved more like a sputtering lawn mower than a finely tuned engine firing up on the first pull of the cord.
