Yankees-Cardinals postponed Friday due to inclement weather, will play doubleheader Saturday

The Yankees got an unexpected day off as their weekend gets underway in St. Louis.

Friday night’s series opener against the Cardinals has been postponed due to inclement weather. The matchup was rescheduled for Saturday as part of a split-double header starting at 2:15 p.m. ET with the nightcap scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET.

Luis Severino was expected to take the ball against Matthew Liberatore, however, Severino will now toe the slab in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader followed by a bullpen game, Aaron Boone told reporters on Friday.

Severino is coming off of an . The right-hander tossed six shutout innings allowing five hits while striking out four on June 24. The 29-year-old has had an overall shaky season with his ERA sitting at 5.25.

Gerrit Cole will take the ball Sunday as the Cardinals’ scheduled starter was former Yankee Jordan Montgomery. The left-hander was dealt to St. Louis from the Yanks for outfielder Harrison Bader w this weekend, weather permitting.

The three-game weekend set will be the final of a six-game road trip for the Bombers before they head home to kick off a four-game set against the Baltimore Orioles.
