A pair of former Broncos head coaches and one of the franchise’s best-ever defensive players are Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalists again this year, though the trio has known disappointment in the past.
Coaches Mike Shanahan and Dan Reeves along with linebacker Randy Gradishar are among 60 seniors, coaches and contributors to make the first cut toward 2024 enshrinement. So, too, are former Broncos assistant coach Alex Gibbs and former Colorado offensive lineman and NFL executive John Wooten.
The HOF selection committees nominated a total of 31 senior semifinalists and 29 coach and contributor semifinalists.
Shanahan, of course, won two Super Bowls during his head coaching run from 1995-2008 and is the franchise’s all-time wins leader at 138. Reeves, who died in 2022, is second at 110 and served as the Broncos’ head man from 1981-92. He also served as the head coach for the New York Giants (1993-96) and Atlanta (1997-2003) and won 190 total games as a head coach.
Gradishar spent his 10-year career with the Broncos. He was the 1978 AP Defensive Player of the Year and a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.
Gradishar was a finalist for the Hall of Fame last year as well as 2003, 2008 and 2020.
Shanahan and Reeves were also finalists a year ago.
Finalists in both categories will be decided July 27.
