Brighton officer dragged 76 feet by moving car while trying to arrest suspect

The officer remains in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery

A Brighton police officer was dragged 76 feet by a moving car when a suspect tried to flee.

On Aug. 16, the Brighton officer made contact with an individual parked in the area of North 19th Avenue and Overland Drive. The man, a domestic violence suspect, had a warrant out for his arrest.

When officers attempted to contain the vehicle and arrest the man, the suspect refused to exit the vehicle, police said .

The Brighton officer attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle, but the driver pulled away at a high speed while the officer was still holding onto him, dragging him alongside the car, the release said.

According to the release, the suspect hit two other vehicles in the parking lot and drove about 76 feet before the officer fell off the vehicle.

The suspect later exited his vehicle and hid in a nearby apartment. After a short time, he exited and was arrested without further incident, the release said.

The man was arrested and booked into the Adams County jail on multiple charges, including first-degree assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and vehicular eluding.
