A fatal crash that killed a man on a motorcycle Friday morning shut down eastbound Interstate 70 on its approach to the Eisenhower tunnel for several hours while authorities processed the scene.

Sgt. Troy Kessler, with the Colorado State Patrol, said his agency received a call of a man involved in a “single motorcycle crash” on the hill leading up to the tunnels shortly after 8 a.m. He said the victim was a 63-year-old man from South Dakota.

Kessler did not describe the nature of the crash or identify the motorcyclist but he said no other vehicles were involved. Motorists were forced to detour around the crash by using U.S. 6 in Silverthorne and then driving over Loveland Pass.

The eastbound side of I-70 reopened around 11 a.m., Kessler said.
