Mike McGlinchey missed two weeks with a knee sprain, but he’s wasted little time jumping back into action.
The Denver right tackle returned to practice Tuesday and then got extensive work Wednesday in a joint practice with the Los Angeles Rams.
“I’m anxious to look at the tape,” head coach Sean Payton said afterward. “Itap good to get him back out there. You feel his presence from a leadership perspective. Just being field level, itap not like I had a chance to look just at him. Typically speaking, sometimes if you don’t notice a tackle, that’s pretty good.
“But I know we’re better when he’s out there, and you felt his presence just in the team drills.”
Safety Justin Simmons (groin), meanwhile, warmed up and did individual work but wasn’t involved in any of the team drills Wednesday.
Broncos who didn’t participate due to injury: safety P.J. Locke (foot/ankle), nickel K’Waun Williams (ankle), cornerback Riley Moss (core) and defensive lineman D.J. Jones.
Broncos add defensive tackle. Denver on Wednesday morning signed defensive tackle Tomasi Laulile and waived long snapper Jack Landherr IV.
Laulile played 12 snaps against Denver on Saturday for San Francisco before being waived earlier this week. Laulile, 28, went undrafted out of BYU in 2018 and has bounced around several practice squads.
“I talked with (general manager George Paton) this morning, and it just gives us some additional depth going into this preseason game, so I’m glad he’s here,” Payton said.
Landherr was signed recently to compete with long snapper Mitchell Fraboni. Fraboni overall has had a clean camp, and Denver’s field goal snap-and-spot operation has been good between him and punter Riley Dixon.
Boomers. Dixon, meanwhile, has been impressive in his own right outside of one rough performance in Denver’s preseason opener.
He averaged 59.5 gross yards on four punts against San Francisco on Saturday — 49.5 net average — and had another strong showing Wednesday.
“He carried it over the other night in the game,” Payton said, nodding to Dixon’s strong practice work overall in camp. “The anomaly was the first game in Arizona. He punted well again today. He’s a good athlete and we’re glad we have him.”
Purcell ready to roll. Broncos defensive lineman Mike Purcell passed his physical and is set to return to action from the Non-Football Injury list, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.
Purcell had been on the NFI list since camp started with a knee issue. He counted against the 90-man roster, so no space has to be made for him to return to practicing.
The veteran defensive tackle’s return had seemed close over the past week as he ramped up his conditioning work substantially.
