One person was hospitalized and numerous horses were killed in a Franktown barn fire early Monday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Just before 5 a.m., the sheriff’s office that deputies were on the scene of a large commercial barn fire near Russellville Road and State Highway 83 in Franktown.

Flames and smoke could be seen for miles from the barn, but the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said there was no need for anyone to call 911 because several crews were already on scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, Franktown Fire Protection District, South Metro Fire, Castle Rock Fire And Rescue Department, Elizabeth Fire Rescue, West Douglas Fire and Jackson Fire all had crews on scene.

In a 5:50 a.m. update, Franktown Fire confirmed that numerous horses had died and one person was transported to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
