After one season at Colorado, receiver Willie Gaines is moving on for his final year of eligibility.
On Tuesday night, Gaines announced that he has entered the transfer portal.
Gaines came to CU last summer for the opportunity to continue playing for Buffs head coach Deion Sanders. Gaines played for Sanders at Jackson State in 2022. The move also allowed him to reunite with quarterback Shedeur Sanders and receivers coach Brett Bartolone, who were also at JSU with him.
Gaines struggled to get into CU’s rotation at receiver, however. A junior last season, he played just 25 snaps in five games, catching two passes for 12 yards.
At Jackson State in 2022, Gaines caught 27 passes for 446 yards and five touchdowns. He had a JSU-best 16.52-yards per catch average.
Prior to JSU, Gaines started his college career at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College in 2020 and 2021. He caught 16 passes for 191 yards for the Conquistadors in 2021.
