A Ouray County man was cited for stealing copies of the Ouray County Plaindealer that featured a story about a teenage girl’s sexual assault at the police chief’s house, according to the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office.

The man allegedly stole newspapers from all but one newspaper rack across the county on Thursday morning, according to the Plaindealer’s publishers. He later returned the newspapers in a trash bag and turned himself into law enforcement.

The Denver Post does not routinely publish the names of suspects in misdemeanor cases.

The man does not have a connection to local law enforcement or the suspects in the sexual assault case, .

The case garnered national attention after co-publishers Erin McIntyre and Mike Wiggins shared the theft on social media and reprinted and redistributed the newspaper.

In an email Monday, Ouray County Undersheriff Tammy Stroup said the case is being submitted to the district attorney for prosecution. A copy of the citation was not immediately available.

Denver Post reporter John Aguilar contributed to this report.
