Large payouts averaged $5.6 million a year from 2017 to 2023, with DPD and sheriff accounting for 89%

Denver paid $39.5 million to settle large lawsuits, legal claims and judgments against the city by the public between 2017 and 2023, according to a Denver Post review of city claims data. Civil rights claims against police drove that total — especially as 2020 protest payouts added up.
