UPDATED on Feb. 14 at 2:55 p.m. to include further details about where Lady Justice Brewing will relocate.
Where one brewery closes, another will open.
That’s the case in Englewood where Sunroom Brewing, 3242 S. Acoma St., plans to close after just a year and a half in business. , which has been a fixture of the Front Range beer scene since 2016, will take over the space and close its Aurora taproom at the end of the month.
“Last year, our family received some news that is going to take us away from our longtime family home, and our second home at Sunroom Brewing,” owners Matt and Melanie Miller said in .
Sunroom Brewing announced its closure Wednesday, a day after Lady Justice announced it would be relocating.
Co-founder Betsy Lay said Lady J has outgrown its current home at 9735 E. Colfax Ave. She had been looking for a larger space when she connected with the Millers. She expects Lady J to make its re-debut on March 20 and to throw a grand opening party April 6-7.
The extra square footage will allow the brewery to welcome more patrons than it could in Aurora.
“Our taproom capacity at Lady Justice was 45 (people),” Lay said. “At Sunroom, the indoor capacity is 90 and the patio is 140.”
The space also includes additional amenities like TVs and double the number of beer taps. Lay hopes to increase the brewery’s annual production, as well as the variety of styles available on draft.
“It’s the same size system, but a lot more brewing we hope,” she said.
The move marks a new chapter for Lady Justice, whose founders Lay, Kate Power, and Jen Cuesta were serving locals beer long before they had a taproom. The operation started nomadically, selling beer through a subscription-based membership program before inking a deal with Denver’s now-defunct Factotum Brewhouse to share its physical space.
, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the brewery’s model has changed over the years, its mission has not. Lady J donates proceeds to charities that support and empower women and girls in Colorado. To date, the company has donated more than , its website says.
The brewery’s founders have also been leaders in making the craft beer industry a safe space for women and the LGBTQ+ community, and advocating for representation among the ranks of industry personnel.
