Woman killed, man arrested in crash at Alameda and Potomac in Aurora

A woman died and a man was arrested on charges including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence after a Sunday evening crash in Aurora.

An Infiniti sedan was driving east on East Alameda Avenue about 8:40 p.m. Sunday when the driver, identified as Damien Sanchez-Balderas, ran a red light at the intersection with South Potomac Street and hit a Ford Focus turning left to travel south on Potomac, according to an Aurora Police Department news release.

The Focus had a green arrow to turn.

The Infiniti lost control after hitting the Focus and hit a signal pole at the intersection, according to the news release.

A woman who was riding in the Infiniti was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will identify her.

The driver of the Focus was uninjured.

Sanchez-Balderas, 31, of Denver, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

After being treated, he was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving under the influence and driving a vehicle as a habitual traffic offender.
