Wildfire west of Pueblo burns 96 acres, almost fully contained

Critical fire weather conditions forecast for Friday, Saturday

A wildfire burning west of Pueblo grew to 96 acres Thursday afternoon but was almost fully contained within four hours, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire was reported at 12:10 p.m. about 14 miles west of the entrance to the Pueblo Reservoir near Colo. 96, said spokesperson Gayle Perez.

Multiple agencies responded to the fire and no structures were threatened, The wildfire burned only grass, brush and trees, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

The fire was 95% contained as of 3:40 p.m. and fire crews plan to monitor hot spots throughout the night.

Wind gusts up to 45 mph and low relative humidity is in the forecast for Pueblo and surrounding counties Friday, and the area is under a red flag warning,

Most of the Front Range and eastern plains are under a fire weather watch Saturday because of critical fire danger caused by wind gusts up to 50 mph and extremely low humidity.
