Denver’s La Alma-Lincoln Park and Arvada’s Gold Strike Park together recently received $15.7 million in federal grant money, it was announced Thursday.
The Department of the Interior awarded the money from its Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Grants Program, part of $254 million awarded to support 54 projects that support local parks in underserved communities across the United States. The Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership is part of the Land and Water Conservation Fund and is managed by the National Park Service.
The $8.4 million bound for La Alma-Lincoln Park, which played a significant role in the history of Colorado’s Chicano movement, will be used to fund a new exercise and cultural story loop, skate park and playground expansion, new roller skate loop and plaza, picnic grove, pollinator garden, restored amphitheater, and sports court and field improvements.
The $7.3 million allocated to the Gold Strike Park in Arvada, the site of Colorado’s first gold discovery, will be used to build a nature playground, water-play area, bouldering feature, trails, creek crossings, pedestrian bridge, flexible event lawn, picnic area, pavilion and pollinator garden.
