A police shooting in Elizabeth on Tuesday morning left a man dead and an Elbert County sheriff’s deputy injured, officials said.

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team tried to serve a search warrant at 175 E. Spruce St. around 9 a.m. Tuesday when a man opened the door and “shots were fired,” Chief Jeffery Engel said during a briefing.

One deputy was shot in the soft part of his ballistic vest and sustained minor injuries, Engel said. The deputy was evaluated by medical responders on scene but was not taken to the hospital.

Elizabeth police and Elbert County sheriff’s deputies called for the Douglas County Regional SWAT team after shots were fired, and officers later determined the man was dead inside the home.

Sheriff and police officials did not specify whether the man was shot by officers and could not immediately be reached for comment.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
