Colorado road conditions: Snow intensifies, closing mountain highways Tuesday night

Roads are “quickly deteriorating,” National Weather Service forecasters said

Previous reporting: A snowstorm swirling across Colorado on Tuesday is covering mountain roads with snow and ice, making travel , according to the National Weather Service.

NWS forecasters said the roads, especially mountain passes, are ““ and will continue to worsen as snow intensifies throughout the day.

Updated 7:30 p.m.: Snow is expected to intensify Tuesday night, making some mountain roads extremely difficult or impossible to navigate, according to the National Weather Service.

People should avoid driving if possible and have a snow emergency kit with an ice scraper, snow brush, coat, gloves, hat, boots, portable shovel, battery, booster cables, phone chargers, water, nonperishable food, blankets and tow strap, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The following roads are closed as of 7:30 p.m.:

  • U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass between I-70 and mile 228.7
  • Northbound U.S. 285 between County Road 7 and Boreas Pass Road
  • Colorado 65 between Crag Crest Trail and Island Lake Road, 16 miles north of Cedaredge.
