Colorado road conditions: Northbound I-25 reopens near Colorado Springs after multi-hour crash closure

Portions U.S. 6 close due to snow or crashes Wednesday

Update 7:17 p.m.:A rockslide in Fremont County closed Highway 50 at milepost 231 — just west of Howard. The road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time, according to Colorado State Patrol.

Update 2:45 p.m.: Northbound Interstate 25 reopened between Northgate Boulevard near Gleneagle and Colorado 105 near Woodmoor around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

U.S. 40 also reopened in both directions around 2:30 p.m. between Ranch Road and Chimney Rock Road, about 16 miles west of Kremmling, CDOT officials said.

The only major road that remains closed Wednesday afternoon in Colorado is U.S. 6, which is closed in both directions over Loveland Pass between Interstate 70 and Mile Point 228, according to CDOT officials.

Update 1:45 p.m.: Westbound Colorado has reopened at Ford Street in Golden after a crash Wednesday morning caused a nearly four-hour closure, according to CDOT officials.

Northbound Colorado 9 also reopened Wednesday afternoon between County Road 4 and County Road 2 and U.S. 550 reopened in both directions between County Road 31 north of Silverton and County Road 20D south of Ouray, CDOT officials said.

As of 1:45 p.m., the following roads remain closed for snow removal, car crashes and other safety concerns:

  • Northbound I-25 between Exit 156 for Northgate Boulevard near Gleneagle and Colorado 105 near Woodmoor;
  • U.S. 6 in both directions over Loveland Pass between Interstate 70 and Mile Point 228;
  • U.S. 40 in both directions between Ranch Road and Chimney Rock Road, about 16 miles west of Kremmling.

Thornton is no longer on “accident alert” status, city officials said Wednesday afternoon.

Update 11:55 p.m.: Thornton went on “accident alert” status at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to city officials.

If drivers are involved in an accident where no one is injured, they should not call 911, city officials said. Instead, they should exchange information with the other driver, report the incident to their insurance company and file a police report later.

If any of the drivers involved in the accident cannot produce evidence of insurance, Thornton police officers should be called.

Update 10:40 a.m.: Northbound Interstate 25 is closed for a crash between Colorado 105 and Exit 163 for County Line Road in Woodmoor, about 20 miles north of Colorado Springs, .

Colorado 65, which was closed in both directions between Crag Crest Trail and Island Lake Road north of Cedaredge, reopened around 10:38 a.m., according to CDOT officials.

Update 10 a.m.: Westbound Colorado 58 is closed at Ford Street in Golden for a crash, .

Update 8:45 a.m.: Eastbound Interstate 70 between Glenwood Springs and Blair Ranch and U.S. 50 between Garfield and Maysville have both reopened to traffic, according to CDOT.

Update 7:30 a.m.: Eastbound Interstate 70 closed between Exit 114 for Glenwood Springs and Exit 129 for Blair Ranch east of No Name due to a crash, .

Previous reporting: Heavy overnight snow in Colorado’s mountains created hazardous travel conditions that will continue through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Slick, slushy roads are also on their way to Denver after the snowstorm spread into the metro area overnight, NWS forecasters said.

NWS forecasters said roughly two feet of snow has fallen in Colorado above 10,000 feet and more is on the way, making some mountain roads impassible.

As of 6:30 a.m., the following roads were closed:

  • U.S. 6 in both directions over Loveland Pass between Interstate 70 and Mile Point 228. A shows the highway is completely covered with nearly two feet of snow;
  • U.S. 50 in both directions between County Road 888 west of Garfield and County Road 240 near Maysville;
  • Colorado 65 in both directions between Crag Crest Trail and Island Lake Road north of Cedaredge.

Multiple Waze users also reported icy conditions and standstill traffic on:

  • Interstate 70 between Exit 216 for U.S. 6 and Loveland Pass and Exit 205 for Colorado 9.
  • Northbound Interstate 25 between Exit 173 for Spruce Mountain Road and Exit 181 for Plum Creek Parkway near Castle Rock.
