A man shot himself in the leg while driving and crashed his vehicle into a strip mall near Virginia Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Denver overnight, according to police and firefighters.

Denver’s Fire Department wrote in a social media post shortly after midnight Friday that firefighters were responding to a “collapse” and broken gas line in the area. Xcel Energy had shut down the gas line by 12:19 a.m.

Fire spokesperson Luis Cedillo wrote in an email that the driver was transported to a hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was being treated for his injuries Friday morning.

He also said the crash damaged one of the exterior walls of the building, which Doug Schepman of the Denver Police Department said is located in the 400 block of Federal Boulevard.
