49-year-old man shot by Golden, Denver police officers after foot chase in Lakewood near West Colfax Avenue

Shooting reported near intersection with Pierce Street on Tuesday

A 49-year-old man wanted on suspicion of vehicular eluding was injured Tuesday in a shooting with Denver and Golden police during a foot chase in Lakewood.

Lakewood police attempted to pull Jason Wayne Ray over around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday because he had an arrest warrant for felony eluding, department spokesperson John Romero .

When Lakewood police walked up to Ray’s car, the man fled. According to a Tuesday night news release, Ray almost hit the officers with his car while leaving and had a gun on his lap.

Lakewood agents, along with Golden and Denver police officers on the , tracked Ray to an apartment complex at West Colfax Avenue and Pierce Street, near and an Arc Thrift Store.

Police made contact with Ray around 4:15 p.m. and officials said he fled on foot with a gun in his hand. It’s not clear if he pointed or fired the gun at officers, but two police detectives, one from Golden and one from Denver, shot Ray during the chase.

He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. No police officers were injured in the shooting, Romero said.

As of Thursday morning, Ray was still in the hospital, but Romero said he would be arrested and charged when released.

The shooting is being investigated by the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team.
