1 p.m. update: Snow continuing to fall across Colorado on Tuesday — paired with frigid temperatures — is shutting down national and state highways and causing crashes, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, the following roads remained closed:

  • between mile point 222 and Interstate 70, including Loveland Pass
  • between Exit 216 for U.S. 6/Loveland Pass and Exit 205 for Colorado 9/Silverthorne

Original story: Part of northbound Interstate 25 was closed for three hours Tuesday morning south of Fort Collins after five separate car crashes, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

State patrol officials said there were two single-vehicle crashes, two crashes involving two cars and one crash involving four cars. A total of 10 cars were involved in the crashes, which happened just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics took two people involved in the four-car crash to the hospital, state patrol officials said.

One of the four drivers got out of his car after the initial crash and was struck by either another car or debris, causing serious bodily injury, and a second driver who remained inside his car had minor injuries from the crash, state patrol officials said.

The northbound interstate was closed at mile point 262, where I-25 intersects with Colorado 392, .

“Road conditions remain icy and motorists should lower their speeds, leave extra room between vehicles and drive with caution,” state patrol officials said.

In Jefferson County, another large crash shut down eastbound Interstate 70 at Exit 254 for U.S. 40 and Genesee, . An hour after the full shutdown, at about 9:20 a.m., the left lanes had reopened to traffic and the interstate fully reopened by noon.

A posted on social media by Jefferson County sheriff’s officials shows at least four cars parked on the side of the closed interstate. It’s unclear how many were involved in the crash.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
