Five people were injured in Adams County on Thursday after a strange odor was reported in an apartment complex, according to fire officials.

Adams County Fire Rescue crews responded to an apartment building in the 8300 block of Zuni Street at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday for the odor investigation, fire officials said in a on social media. That’s just east of Westminster and south of Federal Heights.

Four people drove themselves to the hospital and paramedics took one more person by ambulance, fire officials said in an . The extent of their injuries is unknown.

Fire officials said the North Metro Fire Rescue’s Hazmat Response Team found traces of pepper spray inside the building.

The building was temporarily evacuated during the investigation, according to the fire department.

Residents were evacuated around 3:50 a.m. and let back into their apartments at about 6 a.m., according to Adams County fire officials.
