Class 5A

1. Cherry Creek (1-0) won at Regis Jesuit, 45-10: Senior Jayden Fox ran in three touchdowns, including one from 94 yards out, and the Creek defense dominated in the opening salvo of the Bruins’ 5A title defense. Next week: at Cardinal Mooney (Fla.), 5 p.m. Aug. 29.

2. Valor Christian (1-0) won at No. 8 Pine Creek, 36-14: Facing third-and-20 with his team trailing by five in the second quarter, sophomore QB Titus Huard found Cash Spence along the sideline, and the senior Colorado Mines commit did the rest to score a game-swinging 40-yard TD. It was the second of three TDs for Spence, who helped the Eagles survive a sloppy, rain-soaked affair that featured countless mishandled snaps and fumbles. Kicker Luke Brust added a pair of field goals, including a 39-yarder in the third quarter, while the Valor defense kept Pine Creek off the scoreboard in the second half. Next week: at No. 6 Regis Jesuit, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29.

3. Legend (1-0) won vs. Fruita Monument, 63-10: Boston College commit DJ Bordeaux threw five touchdown passes and ran for one more in his Titans debut, Freddie Burke returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and head coach Jake Heaps came out a winner in his first game leading Legend. Next week: vs. No. 9 Grandview, 7 p.m. Aug. 28.

4. Ralston Valley (0-0) did not play. Next week: at Erie, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29.

5. Columbine (0-1) lost at Vista Ridge, 24-14: The Rebels lost their season opener for the first time in nine years, as 4A power Vista Ridge scored a stunning upset a year after Columbine beat the Wolves 42-7 at Jeffco Stadium. Next week: vs. ThunderRidge, 4 p.m. Aug. 29.

6. Regis Jesuit (0-1) lost vs. No. 1 Cherry Creek, 45-10: The Raiders went down 38 points before countering with a haymaker of their own on a fumble return TD from Sawyer Burruss late in the first half. A Burruss interception set up Regis’ other three points not long after, but it was too little to keep up with the defending 5A champions. Next week: vs. No. 2 Valor Christian, 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29.

7. Fairview (0-0) did not play. Next week: at Legacy, 7 p.m. Aug. 29.

8. Pine Creek (0-1) lost vs. No. 2 Valor Christian, 36-14: Special teams cost Creek dearly in a wet and wild season-opening loss. Botched or errant punt snaps led to 17 Valor points in the first half, including a skipped snap that Valor scooped up and returned for a 24-14 lead before the break. Still, Creek managed to take a brief 14-9 lead midway through the second quarter with back-to-back TDs. Brady Walden punctuated an 18-play march with a 7-yard run for the first score, and Creek capitalized on an errant Valor punt snap that Malakai Harkley pounced on for the go-ahead score. Next week: vs. Cherokee Trail, 7 p.m. Aug. 28.

9. Grandview (1-0) won at Vista PEAK Prep, 42-14: Senior quarterback Blitz McCarty threw a pair of touchdown passes, Jaxson Flores returned a punt for a score, and Chris Blanks ran in two TDs of his own as the Wolves cruised. Next week: at No. 3 Legend, 7 p.m. Aug. 28.

10. Arvada West (1-0) won at Fountain-Fort Carson, 34-13: Former Denver North and Westminster coach CJ Hanna earned a win in his first game leading the Wildcats, who beat Fountain-Fort Carson for the second straight year. Next week: vs. Mountain Range, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 28.
