Editor’s note: Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael J. Allen announced Wednesday that no criminal charges will be filed against Colorado Springs police officers Christopher Laabs and Logan Scheppele in the fatal Aug. 22 shooting of Cole Vannucci. .
A man was neighborhood on Friday afternoon after he fired at them as they tried to arrest him, officials said.
Members of the ‘s violent offender task force and tactical unit were searching for a “wanted suspect” in the 1100 block of Branding Iron Circle at 2:48 p.m. when they found the man and tried to contact him in his vehicle, the agency said on social media.
Department officials did not say what charges the man was accused of.
The man refused to leave the vehicle, and after officers saw he had a gun, he fired at least one round at police.
At least one officer returned fire, and police arrested him and started emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived. The man, as Cole Vannucci, was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers or other community members were injured in the shooting, police officials said. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
