Prosecutors have filed murder charges against two men accused of shooting a woman during an attempted carjacking in Westminster in October, announced the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

Daniel Romero, 19, and Michael Fernandez Jr., 24, were both charged with second-degree murder and attempted robbery in connection with the Oct. 27 fatal shooting of Maria Ines DeLuna Ojeda. The charges were filed in Adams County District Court.

Romero was also charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, according to the news release.

Officers were called to reports of gunshots in the 8400 block of Decatur Street at about 8 p.m. Video showed a car pulling up to Ojeda, who worked at a Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles office, as she got into her own car.

A man got out of the second car and shot at Ojeda as she backed up. Ojeda, 34, was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, according to police.

Police found four bullet holes in Ojeda’s windshield and driver’s side window.

Romero previously served a three-year sentence after he was convicted of attempted murder, according to police.
