Ground delay ordered for DIA flights during Wednesday windstorm

Departing flights delayed an average of 74 minutes, FAA says

Federal aviation officials ordered a on Wednesday afternoon because of high winds sweeping the Front Range, delaying hundreds of flights.

The ground delay is active until 9 p.m. and impacts all flights departing to destinations in the contiguous U.S., according to a Federal Aviation Administration alert.

Departing flights are delayed by an average of 74 minutes, FAA officials said.

There were 242 flight delays at DIA as of 3:30 p.m., according to the flight tracking website . Airlines reported 10 cancellations.

Southwest Airlines reported 109 delays, followed by 64 delayed United flights and 42 delayed SkyWest flights.

Steady winds of up to 25 mph and 40 mph wind gusts are forecast for the airport throughout the afternoon, from the National Weather Service show.
