Hundreds of flights delayed at Denver airport ahead of New Year’s Eve

More than 500 flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Monday failed to leave the gate on time as the busy holiday travel season continued nationwide.

By the time the last plane took off on Monday, 562 flights had been delayed and 15 had been canceled, according to flight tracking software . No federal ground stops or ground delays were in effect at the airport on Monday, according to the .

Roughly half of the delayed flights were scheduled to leave DIA, and half were headed into the city, according to FlightAware.

Nearly 900 flights were delayed at DIA the day before — which was expected to be one of Denver’s busiest travel days of the season, — after 2.2 inches of snow fell at the Denver airport.

Southwest delayed 221 flights in and out of Denver on Monday, followed by 130 from SkyWest, 112 from United, 42 from Frontier, 22 from Delta and 15 from American Airlines, according to FlightAware. Eight other airlines delayed between one and five flights.

Southwest and Frontier canceled the most flights at DIA on Monday, each removing four from their rosters. United and Delta each canceled three flights, and SkyWest canceled one.
