East Denver sushi fans shuddered in late December when Okinawa Japanese Cuisine, a mainstay on Colfax Avenue since 2010, closed and boarded up its doors with brown paper.

But head sushi chef Alan Cheng said the closure is for renovations rather than a permanent move. “It’s not that big … just touch-ups.” He added that the remodel could take at least a month.

Okinawa, at 2301 E. Colfax Ave., is popular with neighborhood residents and students at East High School a few blocks away.

Okinawa’s owner, Xi Yong Zheng, opened Ma’s Kitchen Dumplings & Noodles in an adjacent property, at 1514 York St. in October. Ma’s Kitchen’s kitchen is led by his brother, Xi Nuan Zheng and has been packed with customers, especially on weekends.
