Xcel Energy’s planned public safety power shutoff has led some northern Colorado schools to pre-emptively cancel classes on Friday. Utility officials announced Thursday that 9,000 customers will be affected.

The planned power outage is set to begin around 8 a.m. Friday. Power company officials said they decided to implement the shutoff amid high winds, low humidity, dry ground conditions and historically low snowpack.
