Cities across the metro area activated emergency cold weather shelter programs on Thursday as Colorado braced for a wave of arctic cold and snow.
Commerce City
Commerce City’s Eagle Pointe Recreation Center, 6060 E. Parkway Drive, will serve as a daytime warming center and overnight shelter from 6 p.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Sunday, .
Eagle Pointe’s community rooms will be filled with seating and tables during the day and switch over to cots at night, .
Those staying overnight will be required to enter the shelter by 10 p.m., officials said. Anyone who leaves the building overnight will not be allowed back in until 8 a.m. the following morning.
The shelter’s maximum overnight capacity is 30 people, according to the news release. There is minimal storage space, and guests should only bring a backpack or a personal bag, city officials said.
“If the overnight shelter reaches capacity, staff monitoring that phone line will have information about other potential resources and locations for those seeking shelter,” the release stated.

Westminster
, a recreation center at 3295 W. 72nd Ave. in Westminster, will serve as a cold weather shelter from 5 p.m. Thursday until noon on Sunday, .
Programs and services at the MAC will continue to operate as normal during that time, .
The city activates its emergency plan when temperatures are forecast to hit zero degrees, or windchills below zero degrees are expected for six hours or more, according to Westminster officials.
