A man was killed and a woman was seriously injured after a semitrailer crossed into oncoming traffic on U.S. 287 north of Fort Collins early Saturday morning, according to state investigators.

The crash happened at about 4:47 a.m. near mile 355 of U.S. 287, roughly a mile south of Ted’s Place in Larimer County, Sgt. Ivan Alvarado said.

A northbound semitruck driven by a 24-year-old man from New York crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Toyota sedan head-on, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the female driver, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol.

Both vehicles caught fire after the crash, state patrol officials said.

Paramedics took the Toyota driver, a 20-year-old woman, to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the release. Her passenger, a 21-year-old man who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene of the crash.

The man will be identified by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

David Perez Carillo, the semitrailer driver from New York, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and driving on the wrong side of a divided highway, according to state patrol officials.

Troopers closed the highway for more than seven hours on Saturday during the crash cleanup and investigation. The road reopened after noon on Saturday.

Information on the cause of the crash — including whether alcohol, drugs, speeding or drowsiness are suspected as possible factors — was not available Sunday.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
