The Ruby Hill Rail Yard will open for the season on Sunday with new features for skiers and snowboarders from beginner to advanced.

Denver Parks and Rec, in partnership with Winter Park Resort, launched the rail yard in 2007 as North America’s first urban winter terrain park. This year’s Warren Miller ski film, released last fall, includes a segment on the park and those who love it. It attracts more than 12,000 visitors annually, according to a Parks and Rec news release.

The park, located at South Platte River Drive and West Jewell Avenue, will have newly designed trails, boxes and feature configurations. It is equipped with snowmaking machines that operate when temperatures are cold enough.

The rail yard is open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., although the lights for evening skiing and riding are currently down for repairs. Park officials advise visitors not to ride, ski or sled after dark until the lights are fixed.

A rail jam is scheduled for Feb. 14. Weather permitting, the rail yard will remain open until March. Admission is free.
