Updates

8:48 p.m.: And here’s the team standings after Day 1 of the larger classifications: In Class 5A, powerhouse Pomona (seeking its eighth straight title) already has a commanding lead as the Panthers advanced 11 of their 14 wrestlers to the semifinals. In Class 4A, Air Academy (62 points) and Pueblo East (61) sit atop the leaderboard, with Roosevelt (49.5) lurking. In Class 5A girls, Grand Junction Central (60.5) is first, Pomona (52) is second and Chatfield (41) is third, with the Warriors in control of their own destiny with seven wrestlers in the semifinals. — Kyle Newman

5:46 p.m.: Heading into Friday’s semifinals in the lower classes, Cedaredge (55 points) leads Class 2A, with North Fork (50), Burlington (45.5) and Rocky Ford (44.5) close behind. In Class 3A, Eaton’s built up a huge lead with 83.5 points, with the closest behind the Reds being Fort Lupton at 42.5. In girls Class 4A, Pueblo Central (57.5) is in first with Las Animas (45.5) in second. — Kyle Newman

3:22 p.m.: Itap the dream of any high school wrestler: A perfect season to claim a state championship. There are 10 female wrestlers at this weekend’s state tournament aiming for an unbeaten season, but something will have to give in two 5A divisions. In the 100-pound division, Pomona’s Justice Gutierrez and Sand Creek’s Peggy Dean look destined to clash in the final. Dean, the No. 2 seed, is 38-0 this season. Gutierrez, the two-time defending state champion, hasn’t lost a match since her freshman year, owning a three-year record of 112-1. There’s also the looming showdown between Pomona senior Timberly Martinez, the only wrestler at Ball Arena this weekend with an opportunity to win state titles in all four years, and Brighton’s Matilda Hruby. Hruby, a perfect 25-0 this season after beating Martinez twice, is aiming for her third state title. — Nate Peterson

3:10 p.m.: In a normal year, Colorado usually has a few great freshmen worth keeping tabs on at the state tournament. But this season, the freshman class is stacked with premier wrestlers across all classifications who could all win state titles. As Thursday’s quarterfinals lead into Friday’s semifinals, keep an eye on these youngsters, who should cruise through the initial couple rounds: Adams City’s Jax Quintana (113 pounds), Fort Lupton’s Josiah Orozco (113), Pueblo East’s Urijah Duran (113), Air Academy’s Dylan Saba (120), Eaton’s Parker Wickam (132), Pomona’s Donovan Symalla (157) and Crowley County’s Levi Gibson (175). All of them are ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in their weight by On The Mat coming into state. — Kyle Newman

2:03 p.m.: There are three returning champions in the Class 2A boys field: Cedaredge’s Jared Roberts (113 pounds), Cedaredge’s Cash Martinez (120 pounds), and Wray’s Austin Collins (150 pounds). Collins is a two-time champion, winning state titles at 126 pounds in 2024 and 132 pounds in 2025. All three defending champions cruised through their opening round matches on Thursday. Roberts pinned Radley Thomas of Wiggins School District in 3 minutes, 14 seconds, Martinez pinned Aden Gallegos of Sierra Grande/Centennial in 1 minute, 28 seconds and Collins pinned Akash Murchadha of North Fork High School in 55 seconds. There’s also a battle of the unbeatens brewing at 215 pounds in 2A with Buena Vista’s Carter Stromer (39-0) and Burlington’s Anthony Estrada (35-0) in the bracket. Estrada won his opening match on Thursday with a pin of Wray’s Yariel Aguilar Servin in 2 minutes, 27 seconds, while Stromer pinned North Park’s Levi Seely in 40 seconds. — Nate Peterson

1:46 p.m.: As the Class 2A preliminaries are in full swing, keep an eye on the team race in this classification. Cedaredge won its first title last year, and could repeat. But there are four other squads capable of making a run at the crown, and it will likely come down to who performs the best on the consolation side of the bracket as well as in Saturday night’s championships. North Fork, Highland, Rocky Ford and Meeker — a team that was unranked by On The Mat in the preseason but climbed to No. 3 entering the tournament — all have a legitimate shot to challenge Cedaredge’s reign. — Kyle Newman

12:30 p.m.: The 2026 state tournament begins Thursday at Ball Arena. There are 52 returning champions and 19 unbeaten wrestlers among the field of more than 1,300 qualifiers.

There’s one wrestler in the field chasing a fourth state championship (Pomona senior Timberly Martinez) and several others looking to climb another rung on the ladder. There have been 33 boys and two girls to win four state titles in Colorado wrestling history, most recently Fowler’s Traven Sharon last year. Martinez, who is in the Class 5A 155-pound weight class, won at 130 as a freshman, 135 as a sophomore and 140 as a junior.

But she faces a significant obstacle to achieving the feat: Brighton junior Matilda Hruby, who seeks her third title. Hruby beat Martinez 5-2 in the Eaglecrest Girls Invite in December, then beat her again at the Tiara Challenge in January, 10-9. They will likely meet in the finals.

With 1,344 wrestlers competing at Ball Arena across six different classifications (four for boys and two for girls), 16 individuals who have wrestled at least 20 matches are going for a perfect season.
