Aurora police looking for leads in death of Boulder-based jam band’s drummer

The Aurora Police Department is searching for leads in the December homicide of a man well-known for drumming in a Boulder-based jam band.

Former drummer Matthew Coconis, 53, was found dead on Dec. 14 in the 14000 block of East Jewell Avenue, which is near in Aurora, according to police.

The death was first reported as suspicious, but the coroner’s office recently completed its investigation and determined the manner of death was homicide.

The Aurora Police Department’s news release did not provide a cause of death.

No arrests have been made, and there is no suspect information.

Aurora police are asking for tips, and the Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for tips that lead to an arrest. Call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

Coconis, who lived in Aurora at the time of his death, was the drummer in Acoustic Junction, a jam band that formed in Boulder in 1989, toured heavily through the 1990s and split up in 2000. His playing style earned him the nickname “Animal,” according to .

He was also a carpenter.

Coconis is survived by two sisters, two brothers and two nephews.
