A 17-year-old boy died Monday after an Aurora crash sent him and two others to the hospital the week before, police said.

Aurora officers spotted a suspected stolen vehicle near East Mississippi Avenue and East Alameda Parkway at about 4 a.m. on June 28, according to a news release from the police department. The officers tried to pull the driver over, but the driver refused to stop.

The officers pursued the vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, for roughly a minute before calling off the chase because of the suspect’s speed and erratic driving, police said.

Minutes later, the Volkswagen collided with a Subaru WRX nearly 6 miles away, near South Havana Street and East Alameda Avenue, police said.

The Volkswagen caught fire, which was extinguished by the same officers who attempted the earlier traffic stop, according to the release.

Investigators believe the Volkswagen driver, an unidentified 17-year-old boy, was speeding west on Alameda when he ran a red light and crashed into the Subaru. Paramedics took the driver, his 23-year-old passenger and the 28-year-old man driving the Subaru to the hospital, police said. The 17-year-old Volkswagen driver died at a hospital more than a week later.

As of Monday, the Subaru driver had been released and the Volkswagen passenger remained hospitalized. The Volkswagen driver will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office
