High winds force road closures, high school basketball relocations in Colorado

The wind also is causing power outages

9:30 p.m. Colorado State University will be closed Friday, and in-person, hybrid and remote classes are canceled for all Larimer County campuses, CSU officials announced in a statement Thursday evening.

3:15 p.m. Shortly after 3 p.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation announced Colorado 93 was reopening between Colorado 72 and Colorado 128. CDOT also said U.S. 85 northbound was reopening between Weld County Road 108 and the Wyoming state line.

3:05 p.m. The Colorado High School Activities Association moved the 2A Boys and Girls Basketball Great 8 games from Colorado State University’s Moby Arena on Thursday to Longmont High School and Frederick High School. The CSU campus closed Thursday because of high winds. The tournament is scheduled to return to CSU on Friday.

1:55 p.m. Colorado 128 in Boulder County reopened between Eldorado Boulevard and Colorado 93. The road had been closed because of high wind.

12:33 p.m.: Interstate 70 has reopened as of 11:30 a.m.

11:41 a.m.: U.S. 85 northbound is closed between Weld County Road 108 and the Wyoming state line.


Strong winds on Thursday are causing hazardous driving conditions in Colorado along with scattered power outages.

The winds have caused three semitrailer crashes, including one that caused the closure of Interstate 70’s eastbound lanes.

And the Colorado Department of Transportation closed both directions on Interstate 25 north of Fort Collins because of unsafe conditions.

A second semitrailer crash has closed a section of .

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that high winds are leading to hazardous driving conditions in the foothills.

Westbound I-70 traffic is being diverted onto U.S. 40 at Exit 256, according to the sheriff’s office.

 

The first semitrailer crash on Colorado 93 was reported 8:44 a.m., and that truck hit a power line. A Subaru Outback was also involved in the crash, according to a state patrol news release.

A 38-year-old man, who was driving the semitrailer, was taken to a hospital but the extent of his injuries is unknown, the state patrol said.

That highway is closed between Colorado 72 and Colorado 128.

At 9:32 a.m., troopers responded to a third rollover involving a semi hauling a trailer on Colorado 93 and Rocky Flats Plant Road. Fluid was reported to be leaking from the semi. There are no reports of injuries, the state patrol said.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office also reported downed and low-hanging power lines in several locations through the foothills west of Boulder.

Just before 2 p.m., Colorado 128 in Boulder County reopened between Eldorado Boulevard and Colorado 93. The road had been closed due to wind.

The strong winds are also causing power outages across the Front Range.

More than 20,000 customers are without power, according CORE Electric and to Xcel Energy’s outage map.
