1 dead in Brighton crash that shut down U.S. 85, sparked grass fire

One man died in a Wednesday morning crash that shut down U.S. 85 for hours in Brighton and sparked a grass fire, police said.

responded to the crash on northbound U.S. 85 at 136th Avenue at about 3:20 a.m. Wednesday, .

A man driving a Volkswagen SUV on the northbound highway drifted off the road and struck a traffic pole at the intersection, police said. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was ejected from the SUV on impact and pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash,” .

U.S. 85 was closed in both directions between 120th Avenue and 144th Avenue in Brighton, , but it had reopened as of 2:58 p.m.

The initial crash sparked a grass fire in the area, but Brighton Fire Rescue crews fully extinguished the flames, police said.
