A teenager arrested Wednesday at their Longmont home is facing a first-degree murder charge, according to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office.

At 3:53 p.m., Longmont dispatch got a call from a Longmont boy who said he had shot and killed someone, according to an arrest affidavit. The boy said he had a Glock handgun but would drop it when police arrived on the scene, then disconnected. The call came from the Cloverbasin Village apartment complex.

Dispatch then received a call from a woman inside the apartment reporting that a boy was injured.

When officers arrived, they found the boy in a bedroom with a gunshot wound. They tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police arrested the suspected shooter, who had left the apartment and was holding a Glock, which he dropped upon police commands, the affidavit states.

Family told police the boy and the suspected shooter were stepbrothers, and that the two didn’t get along and had physically fought before.

A family member told police she didn’t know how the boy got the gun, and that there were no firearms in the home. Another family member confirmed there were no guns in the home and said he did not know the boy had a weapon.

“Our prosecution team is working closely with the detectives to determine what happened, how the teen obtained the gun, and the right path for the criminal prosecution,” Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said in a statement. “It is a sad case; we will work tirelessly to do justice.”

The ages of both boys were redacted in the affidavit. A hearing will be held to determine if the case will remain in juvenile court or if the boy will be tried as an adult, according to Shannon Carbone, a spokesperson for the district attorney’s office.

Longmont police were on scene for several hours on Wednesday, and asked anyone who witnessed the incident and has not yet spoken with police to call Longmont police at 303-651-8555.

Earlier this week, an 11-year-old boy was charged with murder in juvenile court in the death of his 5-year-old brother at their Centennial home. Officials have not announced the cause of death.
