Two people died early Sunday morning in a suspected drunken driving crash that shut down northbound Interstate 25 for hours in Douglas County, according to Lone Tree officials.

Lone Tree police officers responded to the fatal multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-25 at Lincoln Avenue just before 1:45 a.m. Sunday, city spokesperson Melissa Gallegos said Monday in an email to The Denver Post.

Two people died on scene, Gallegos said. It’s unclear how many vehicles were involved in the crash and which vehicles the victims were in.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol is believed to be a factor,” Gallegos stated. “One driver was arrested on DUI and vehicular homicide charges and was transported to the Douglas County jail.”

The arrested driver has not been publicly identified. The people killed in the crash will be identified by the Douglas County Coroner’s Office.

Northbound I-25 was closed for more than eight hours after the crash and reopened at about 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
