Model rocket that sparked Broomfield grass fire was prohibited under fire ban

A grass fire that on Monday afternoon was sparked accidentally by someone launching model rockets in a park.

About 2:30 p.m., North Metro Fire Rescue crews responded to a report of a grass fire in the Remote Control Airfield Park northwest of 144th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard.

When wind picked up, the fire grew to about 7 acres, according to a . The district requested additional resources and issued a pre-evacuation warning for part of the nearby Wildgrass neighborhood.

As of 3:35 p.m., crews had contained the fire, according to Katie Converse, a spokesperson for North Metro Fire Rescue. No injuries were reported.

It was later determined that the fire was accidentally caused by a person using model rockets in dry grass.

The use of model rockets is prohibited under a level 2 fire ban, which is currently in effect in the district.

Broomfield police cited the person for violating open burning restrictions during a fire ban, Converse said.

“With current conditions, it doesn’t take much to start a wildfire. Please follow all fire restrictions and use extreme caution outdoors,” the district stated in the post.
