A hazardous materials spill on a south metro Denver highway is causing traffic backups near Parker, fire officials said Thursday.

A commercial fuel carrier spilled fuel along Colorado 83, also known as South Parker Road, near Parkglenn Way at around 2:45 p.m., South Metro Fire Rescue officials said on social media.

Crews were able to stop the fuel spill in about 30 minutes but said cleanup is expected to cause an extended closure for several lanes of southbound South Parker Road and both directions of Parkglenn Way.

No fuel entered any waterway, fire officials said.

This is a developing story.
