A 20-year-old man was sentenced to 48 years in prison this week after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in a 2022 shooting in east Denver that killed three people, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said.
Luis Rivas-Newcomb was initially charged with three counts of first-degree murder after he fired into another vehicle near 38th Avenue and Peoria Street on April 8, 2022, according to court records.
Investigators said two sedans were driving next to each other southbound on Peoria when the shooting happened, causing one of the vehicles to crash into oncoming traffic and hit a pickup truck.
Rivas-Newcomb, who was 15 at the time, shot into the vehicle carrying 13-year-old Jayden Hoyle and 14-year-old Adrion Foster, who both died at the scene, according to . The truck driver, 37-year-old Uriel Reyes Medina, died at the hospital.
In a statement, Denver District Attorney John Walsh described the shooting as a horrifying incident.
“The streets of Denver are safer because of the 48-year prison sentence Rivas-Newcomb will now serve. Our thoughts remain with the victims’ families and friends,” Walsh said.
An attorney for Rivas-Newcomb declined to comment.
