A man was killed in a fall from the Second Flatiron outside Boulder on Thursday.
About 11:30 a.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a crash detection alert from an Apple device that originated from Chautauqua Park, according to a Boulder County Sheriff’s Office news release. First responders talked with hikers and climbers nearby, and none had seen or heard anything unusual. No other calls were received from the area.
Later, an off-duty member of the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group who was climbing in the area began looking and found a man in a gully about halfway up the Second Flatiron, according to the release. The man had died, and officials believe he may have been solo scrambling. No rope or climbing equipment was found in the area.
The release did not say how much time had passed between the crash detection alert and when the man was found.
The Rocky Mountain Rescue Group conducted a technical extrication to retrieve the man’s body.
The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death and identify the man, once his next of kin have been notified.
Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks also responded to the incident.
