Getting your player ready...

The three-row SUV market has become a gladiator arena of family haulers, luxury pretenders and oversized fuel guzzlers. Yet every once in a while, a vehicle rolls into the driveway that quietly recalibrates expectations without shouting about it through fake exhaust notes or cartoonishly aggressive styling.

That vehicle may very well be the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD.

Finished in Titan Charcoal with an eye-catching gray and navy interior that almost appears white under bright Colorado sunshine, Hyundai’s flagship SUV delivered one of the most compelling combinations of comfort, efficiency, technology and upscale design I’ve experienced in a mainstream family SUV. And perhaps most impressive of all, it does so without wandering deep into luxury-brand pricing territory.

Under the hood rests Hyundai’s turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and HTRAC all-wheel drive. The combination produces smooth, confident acceleration while returning an EPA-estimated 29 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 29 mpg combined. For a full-size, three-row SUV with this much room and equipment, those numbers feel almost science-fiction-adjacent.

And yes, if you lean into the throttle with enthusiasm, this family cruiser responds surprisingly well. Independent testing places the Palisade Hybrid’s 0-to-60 mph time at roughly 6.6 seconds, making it noticeably quicker than the standard V6-powered Palisade.

That extra punch was appreciated during a lengthy Colorado driving loop that included Interstate 70, E-470, C-470, I-25 and U.S. 6 back into Denver. The Palisade remained whisper quiet at highway speeds while delivering a ride quality more akin to a luxury touring sedan than a large SUV.

My chief lieutenant test driver, attorney Roger Adams, joined me on a memorable excursion to the famed Tebo Garage, home to nearly 400 historic transportation artifacts and classic vehicles dating to 1901. Somehow, parking a futuristic hybrid SUV among brass-era automotive history created a poetic transportation time tunnel of sorts. One century displayed in polished chrome and exposed gears. The other wrapped in ambient lighting, giant digital displays and enough computing power to rival a small satellite.

Roger and I both came away deeply impressed with the Palisade’s overall execution. The exterior styling carries a commanding road presence without drifting into overstyled excess, while the interior feels genuinely upscale. The light-colored Nappa leather seating surfaces may concern parents hauling juice boxes, soccer cleats and fast-food wrappers, but if kept clean, the cabin is absolutely stunning.

I also drove the Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy to Longmontap Vance Brand Airport for the monthly pilots meeting of the local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter meeting for May. I was recently selected to speak on the main stage during this year’s EAA Airventure, aka Oshkosh Air Show.

Hyundai loaded the Calligraphy trim with virtually every comfort feature imaginable. First- and second-row relaxation seats, heated and ventilated captain’s chairs, heated third-row outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, three-zone climate control and ambient lighting transform long-distance driving into something resembling business-class air travel on wheels.

Technology lovers will find themselves wandering through a digital playground. Dual 12.3-inch displays dominate the dashboard, joined by a head-up display, Bose premium audio system, surround-view monitor, digital rearview mirror, wireless phone charging, Wi-Fi hotspot capability and Hyundai’s integrated dashcam system.

The Palisade also arrives heavily armored with safety technology. Forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, blind-spot collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic alert, parking collision avoidance assist and a full array of airbags create an electronic safety cocoon around occupants.

Yet despite all the technology, the Palisade never feels cold or sterile. It feels warm. Inviting. Human-centered. Hyundai has become remarkably skilled at blending digital sophistication with genuine comfort.

The beauty of this SUV may ultimately be its versatility. It works equally well as a downtown Denver luxury shuttle, a mountain-road family explorer or a long-distance interstate cruiser. It feels refined in city traffic yet completely at home stretching its legs across Colorado highways.

In an era where many vehicles try too hard to impress, the 2026 Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD simply delivers. Quiet confidence. Elegant design. Exceptional efficiency. Real-world comfort.

That combination makes this Hyundai one of the most complete family SUVs on the road today.
