ATLANTA — Given his history as a two-sport star for the Falcons and Braves, Deion Sanders admitted Atlanta is a place where he enjoyed memorable moments.
By no means was it a picturesque effort by his Colorado Buffaloes in the 2026 season opener, but the end result was something that can certainly be added to that list.
Quarterback Julian Lewis shook off a rough night with a clutch finish, hitting Charlie Williams with a 20-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds remaining to lift the Buffs to a 14-13 victory against Georgia Tech on Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The Buffs trailed 10-7 at the break following a low-scoring but highly eventful first half. CU opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run from Micah Welch, but the lead lasted all of 14 seconds, as Georgia Tech’s Rahkeem Smith went coast-to-coast on a 100-yard kickoff return that tied the game 7-7.
A 22-yard field goal by Aidan Birr with 2 minutes, 3 seconds left in the second quarter gave the Yellow Jackets the halftime lead.
That three-point margin held until late in the fourth quarter, when Birr’s second field goal gave Georgia Tech a 13-7 lead. Lewis then worked some magic, marching the Buffs 75 yards on eight plays to deliver the lead with 37 seconds remaining.
Georgia Tech answered, driving down to set up a potential winner on a 45-yard attempt by Birr, but the kicked was blocked, setting off the Buffs’ celebration.
