The Denver March Pow Wow is in its 47th year and ran for three days at the Denver Coliseum. According to the event抖阴ap website the modern Pow Wow is 鈥渁 gathering, a social occasion and a time for Indian peoples to come together to sing and dance, and to honor the heritage that has been passed down to them from their ancestors.鈥� The event includes dancing, drum circles with drumming and singing and competitive dances. The different styles of dance in the competitions are derived from traditional dances of the various tribes (each tribe has their own origin legends) but the individual dances are not specific to any one tribe. The dances fall into three basic configurations: The Grand Entry, Intertribal dances and contests. Contest Dancing is divided into many categories, depending on style, regional differences, and age. There are six basic categories of contest dances broken down into age categories. The dances include for the men Traditional Dancing, Fancy Dancing, Chicken Dancing, and Grass Dancing. And, for the women: Traditional Dancing, Fancy Shawl Dancing, Jingle Dress Dancing, and Woodlands Applique. The Grand Entry starts the Pow Wow each day. The processional begins with the Heart Beat drum group carrying their drums and singing the Committees鈥� song called 鈥淎 Living Hoop鈥�. Following is an Eagle Staff, The American Flags, Indian Nation Flags and any other flags that are displayed such as the POW-MIA flag, Colorado State Flag etc. The Denver Pow Wow Princess and other visiting royalty follow next and then the rest of the participants. There were two Grand Entries on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday. There are more than 500 federally recognized tribes in the United States alone. Many tribes were represented at the Denver Pow Wow.
