After receiving interest from several NFL teams, quarterback Chad Friehauf decided to stay home.
Friehauf said Sunday night he agreed to sign as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos. A star at Colorado Mines, Friehauf said he expects to finalize a contract within the next week.
“Obviously, growing up in Colorado and going to college in Colorado, I’ve always been a Broncos fan,” Friehauf said. “It’s a dream come true.”
He will go to camp behind incumbent backup quarterback Danny Kanell and 2004 seventh-round draft picks and . Mauck and Van Pelt both have a chance to be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterbacks.
Friehauf, who won the Harlon Hill Trophy in December as Division II’s best player, finished his senior season with D-II season records for pass completions (384), passing yards (4,646), total yards (5,363) and total yards per game (412.5). He completed 74.4 percent of his passes, threw for 39 touchdowns and ran for another 15 scores. He led the Orediggers to a 12-1 record.
Bred to be a Bronco
When Chris Myers stepped into the University of Miami as a 265-pound starting offensive lineman, his teammates told him he was destined to become a Denver Bronco.
“People have put me in that Denver mold,” Myers said. “A natural fit for me.”
Perhaps that’s why Denver made him its first pick Sunday using the 200th overall pick, in the sixth round. Myers, now 6-feet-4, 300 pounds, addresses one of Denver’s biggest needs.
The team needs to develop young interior linemen. is set to go to camp as the starting right guard, with competition from . Myers will play behind them.
Myers showed great versatility at Miami. He played center, guard and tackle, as well as being a long snapper. He said his preferred position is center but expects to play guard with the Broncos. He could also compete at long snapper with incumbent .
Going to the Hall
At 5-9, 176 pounds, second-round pick Darrent Williams has a build similar to Kansas City superstar return man Dante Hall’s.
With three punt returns for touchdowns, the Oklahoma State cornerback also compares to Hall on the field.
Williams visited the Chiefs before the draft and had a conversation with his fellow return star.
“He said he likes what I do,” Williams said of Hall.
