The Big Bluestem Trail – bluestem is a tall grass that grows in this area – is one of many in Boulder’s wonderful and free open space. Connecting with several other trails, the Big Bluestem Trail ascends from Colorado 93 through a vast meadow and three gates to reach the Mesa Trail, which runs north and south between Table Mesa Road and Chautauqua Park on the north and Colorado 170 on the south.

From the northern side of the parking area, begin due west on the wide, dirt road. Pass some houses and pass through a series of three gates as you approach the Boulder Flatirons. After the clear trail curves left (south), you reach a signed fork and a power tower at mile 2.3 of your gradual ascent.

Continue on the West Big Bluestem Trail to the right (west), and hike up and past some cabin remnants on the right before reaching the trees at a junction with the Mesa Trail. You have traveled 3.1 miles on foot at the terminus of this hike. On your return, the vast plains to the east command your view.
