A man who robbed a bank shortly before noon on Wednesday may also be responsible for three other bank robberies in the past month, police said.

A man walked into the US Bank at 1100 S. Broadway and set a suspicious box on the counter in front of a teller. He demanded money from the teller, then told her “she was going to die,” Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The bank was immediately evacuated. Broadway was shut down between Interstate 25 and Arizona Avenue.

Denver police called in the bomb squad, which determined the box was safe and allowed people back inside after about an hour. Police did not say whether the box was a bomb.

Police say the suspect is in his 50s, about 5-feet-5, weighing about 150 pounds, with salt- and-pepper hair. He wore a hunter-style cap with flaps over his ears and a dark plaid jacket.

On May 5, a man entered a World Savings Bank at South Sheridan Boulevard and West Evans Avenue and told the teller he had a bomb, then set a suspicious package on the counter. That “bomb” was a hoax.

In two other incidents at Denver banks, a man told tellers he had a bomb. Both of those “bombs” also were hoaxes.
