Q: The traffic signals at Orchard Road and Interstate 25 were redesigned as part of the T-REX program. They now make a repetitive, dull, tolling noise while you wait for the light to change. The sound doesn’t change when the traffic signal changes. What is the significance of this sound?
John McGrory, Englewood
A: The noise helps visually impaired pedestrians locate the pedestrian crossing. Once activated, a different tone emits to indicate which direction of the intersection is safe for crossing. The system works only when the pedestrian buttons are activated and can be found at other key intersections along the T-REX corridor.
