This afternoon will bring a chance of hail and possibly tornadoes, especially east of Denver, where a tornado watch is in effect until 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service tornado watch covers the eastern Colorado counties of Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Prowers and Yuma.

Thunderstorms are expected to start up south of the metro area and may pose a problem in northeastern Colorado later in the day.

“There remains a threat of severe thunderstorms this afternoon over the Palmer Divide and extending northeast into eastern portions of Arapahoe, Adams and southern Washington counties after 2 p.m,” the National Weather Service advised today.

“Large hail up to 2 inches in diameter along with wind gusts to 60 mph are possible with these storms. In addition, favorable wind shear in the atmosphere supports the potential for tornadoes.

“Further north and west over the urban corridor, cooler temperatures and clouds should keep thunderstorms under severe limits.”

Denver will see a high in the 50s today with an overnight low just above freezing.

Estes Park will reach 47, Greeley 51, Grand Junction 57, and Pueblo will reach 77, 9News predicts.

Thursday and Friday will be in the 50s and 60s with more chance of rain. The weekend will be warmer and dry, however.
